Did the Germans massacre the Jews in Russia? It is possible but the evidentiary problems are many. It is now established that the Jews lied about the 'gas chambers'. One would suspect, then, applying the legal maxim 'false in one thing,; false in all things' that they might be lying about events in Russia as well. There is a second fundamental problem. Those who have evidence of a real mass murder do not need to invent evidence for a fake 'gassing' program. In short, stick with the real crime.
However, none of this is to deny that the Germans shot large numbers of Jews in Russia. They had good reason to. Russian communism was a Jewish creation. Jews were largely behind the illegal partisan warfare against German troops. Naturally, the Germans killed Jews, whether they were fighting in the Red Army or fighting as partisans. The Germans also shot a number of the German and western Jews deported to the east-although with less justification because these Jews were not fighting directly against German troops. Among the reasons were probably inadequate housing facilities and unwillingness to be bothered by the problem. Much has been made of a 1941 diary entry by Reich Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels while visiting Russia when he comments that 'the Jews are being treated roughly and probably half will perish; half will form the nucleus of a new Jewish community'. Goebbels is thus prognosticating, in the early days of the eastern war, what will happen later to the Jews. Whether that is actually what did happen, we do not to this day, know.
Much evidence of what was happening has disappeared. This is severe grounds for suspicion. Thus, the records of the German resettlement camps in Russia have not surfaced. The Einsarzgruppen anti-partisan reports to Berlin have survived but the field reports to the commanders in Russia have vanished. Thus, the numbers cannot be compared for accuracy purposes. There exist British decrypts of SS communications reporting mass executions of Jews in Russia but since these British decrypts cannot be compared to the missing German records there is no way to determine if the decrypts are genuine or a forgery of British intelligence, a la the handless British babies of World War One. One major problem with the extermination of the Jews of Russia claims is the fact that one-half to two-thirds of Russia's Jews had been evacuated behind the Ural Mountains before the advance of the German army. This severely limits the number of Jews the Germans could have shot. Also, the major objective of the Germans in Russia was to defeat the Red Army, not exterminate the Jews. Whatever exterminating the Germans were actually doing probably was done in th first half of the war, June, 1941 to February, 1943, the date of the defeat at Stalingrad. After that date, when the Germans were on the defensive, all available manpower was needed to fight the Red Army, with its overwhelming numerical and material superiority. The Germans would have had no time for such sidelines as massacring Jews.
To return to the comment of Dr. Joseph Goebbels, the comment about the treatment of the Jews being very harsh need not imply an actual extermination. Conditions in communist Russia were very harsh anyway, particularly under war time realities. If the Germans were employing Jews for labor in Russia, as they did elsewhere, then many Jews would have perished, just as they did at Auschwitz. Putting Jews to work building roads, growing crops or making goods for the German army would have produced a high mortality rate. However, the worker starved Germans were not in the habit of bumping off their labor force. One need merely reference Heinrich Himmler's documented order that 'the death rate in the Auschwitz camp be reduced at all costs'. Much has been made of Heinrich Himmler's Posen speech of October 1943-1944 demanding that the Jews of Europe be eradicated. Leaving aside the authenticity of the speech this is merely the usual habit of trying to prove an extermination by what someone said. It confuses a 'pep talk' to the troops with an actual extermination. The post-war exodus of the Jews out of Russia through the Balkans on their way to invade Palestine is clear evidence that the Germans did not succeed, and probably did not even attempt, to exterminate the Jews in Russia. These Jews, whose numbers have been deliberately undercounted, were hiding in the interior of the Soviet Union during the German invasion. Finally, the Jewish preponderance in the Eastern European communist hierarchy after the war is difficult to reconcile with an extermination of Jews in Russia.
Nothing in this essay is intended to deny that large numbers of Jews were killed in Russia during the war. That is established beyond dispute. The heavy concentrations of Jews in the Red Army, the Jewish infested partisan warfare and the retaliatory behaviour of the German army leave no doubt of that. But it is equally clear that claims of the near extermination of Russia Jewry, like claims of 'gas chambers', cannot be subtstantiated. The activities of the Einsatzgruppen are likewise a legend. A small force of only 3000 men, some of wom were administrative, could not have killed anything like the number claimed in Berlin reports. The insufficiency of men, the vastness of the Russian terrain and the almost impossible travel conditions in the harsh Russian winter would have made the kill totals in the reports an absolute impossibility. No one knows the exact numbers of Jews who perished in Russia during the war. The number could be as low as 100,000 or as high as 500,000. But one thing is absolutely clear. The slaughter inflicted on the Jews during the warfare in the east was proportionately no greater than the slaughter inflicted on the Germans. It was a brutal experience for both sides. The casualties of the Jews have received disproportionate attention brcause they serve to bolster a propaganda legend. The casualties of the losers are, as usual, forgotten.
