Fresh calls for Iran sanctions

The United States and France have said new sanctions against Iran are the only option after Tehran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it will begin enriching higher-grade nuclear fuel to a level of 20 per cent.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, and Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, said that Iran should face "strong sanctions" over its nuclear programme, a French official said following a meeting between the two men in Paris.

Witnesses say Ethiopian troops back in Somalia

Heavily-armed Ethiopian vehicles have reportedly crossed into south central Somalia, seizing the family of a man with Al-Shabab links.

Witnesses said the neighboring country's troops entered the towns of El Barde and Yeed on Saturday, seeking the unidentified man, according to a Reuters report.

Al-Shabab fighters have reportedly vacated their strongholds in Mogadishu ahead of a government offensive.

According to sources, the group has been pulling out all its weapons and vehicles from its main stronghold ever since they heard the reports of an imminent government attack.

Iran says CIA agents arrested ahead of Feb. 11 rally

Iran said Saturday it arrested seven people, including two Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives, who planned to stoke unrest and violence on a march scheduled for February 11.

The rally on Thursday will commemorate the 31st victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Al-Shabab impose curfew over stronghold

The Al-Shabab fighters have imposed an undeclared curfew in the southern Somali town of Merka after a number helicopters flew over their stronghold.

Somali opposition fighters ordered the closure of businesses and civil activities in the Lower Shabelle fishing town of Merka after five low-flying helicopters carried out an apparent reconnaissance operation over the coastal town.

Al-Shabab fighters pour into Mogadishu

Hundreds of al-Shabab fighters have poured into the streets of Somalia's capital city, Mogadishu, while the government vows to seize three strategic towns from them.

Heavily armed young al-Shabab fighters who were coming from the town of Baidoa poured into the streets of Mogadishu Friday at midnight, a Press TV correspondent reported.

'Big ransom demanded for ship carrying weapons to S Arabia'

Somali pirates have demanded $15 million, the largest amount of ransom so far, from UK ship Asian Glory reportedly carrying hundreds of modern cars and weapons.
